The Computer Operator is responsible for monitoring and controlling computer systems and networks to ensure optimal performance. This includes running scheduled tasks, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, managing system backups, and providing support to end-users. The role demands attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities

System Monitoring
- Monitor computer systems, networks, and data processing equipment to ensure they function efficiently.
- Ensure that all scheduled jobs and tasks, such as backups, updates, and virus scans, run as expected.
- Identify and resolve any errors or system malfunctions.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Diagnose hardware and software issues and take appropriate action to fix them.
- Perform regular system maintenance and updates to ensure smooth functioning.
- Coordinate with the IT support team for advanced troubleshooting and repairs.

Backup Management
- Ensure regular system backups are completed and stored properly.
- Perform recovery tasks in case of data loss or system failure.
- Manage backup schedules and verify the integrity of backed-up data.

End-User Support
- Provide technical assistance to staff and users, including resolving issues with hardware, software, or network connectivity.
- Train users on basic computer functions, software applications, and best practices.
- Escalate more complex issues to the appropriate IT personnel.

System Operations & Performance Monitoring
- Monitor the performance of systems and networks, ensuring they run efficiently.
- Generate reports on system performance, utilization, and error logs.
- Identify and suggest ways to improve system performance and reduce downtime.

Data Entry & Processing
- Operate and maintain data entry processes, ensuring accurate input into computer systems.
- Assist with data processing tasks as needed, ensuring timely and accurate completion of jobs.

Security & Compliance
- Follow established security protocols to protect computer systems and sensitive data.
- Ensure systems are updated with the latest security patches and antivirus software.
- Report security breaches or potential vulnerabilities to the IT security team.

Documentation
- Maintain logs of system operations, errors, and resolutions.
- Keep documentation of processes, procedures, and system configurations up to date.
- Assist in documenting new processes or system changes.
Skills & Qualifications
- Educational background: High school diploma or equivalent; a diploma in computer science, information technology, or related field preferred.
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience in computer operations or IT support roles.
- Technical proficiency:
- Strong understanding of operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux).
- Knowledge of basic hardware components and networking.
- Proficiency in using system monitoring tools and software.
- Problem-solving skills: Ability to quickly diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues.
- Attention to detail: Ability to monitor systems and identify irregularities or potential issues.
- Communication skills: Good verbal and written communication to assist users and work with IT teams.
- Multitasking: Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work under pressure during system outages.
Working Conditions
- Typically office-based but may involve working in data centers or server rooms.
- May require shift work, including nights and weekends, depending on the organization’s needs.
