The computer operator is responsible for monitoring and controlling computer systems, ensuring the hardware and software function smoothly, and performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting tasks. This role requires vigilance, attention to detail, and the ability to respond quickly to issues.
Key Responsibilities
- System Monitoring:
- Monitor computer systems, servers, and networks for performance and reliability.
- Use monitoring tools and software to track system activities and performance metrics.
- Operations Management:
- Schedule and run batch jobs and processes according to established procedures.
- Perform regular system backups and ensure data integrity.
- Manage system start-ups and shutdowns as required.
- Troubleshooting and Support:
- Identify and troubleshoot system, hardware, and software issues.
- Respond to system alerts and failures promptly to minimize downtime.
- Work with IT support teams to resolve complex technical problems.
- Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as software updates, patches, and hardware inspections.
- Maintain and update system documentation and logs.
- Security:
- Ensure adherence to security policies and protocols.
- Monitor for security breaches and unauthorized access attempts.
- User Support:
- Provide support to end-users for hardware and software-related issues.
- Assist in setting up and configuring new user accounts and workstations.
- Reporting:
- Generate and review system performance reports.
- Document and report any incidents or anomalies to senior management or IT staff.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree in computer science or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience as a computer operator or in a similar role.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and UNIX.
- Familiarity with network and server hardware.
- Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) is a plus.
